What happened

  • An anonymous complainant alleged inappropriate hospitality linked to a June 2007 meeting of the Midlands Psychiatric Research Group (also referred to as ‘West Midland Research Group’).
  • Allegations included: low registration fees historically, free hotel/food, and an evening cultural programme funded by pharmaceutical companies; lack of scientific committee/abstracts/posters; and delegates potentially unaware of pharma funding.
  • The complainant alleged Wyeth had “taken money” for this meeting, alongside other companies.
  • Wyeth said it was reviewing a request to sponsor the 2007 meeting in Coventry but had not decided to sponsor it; any sponsorship (if agreed) would be limited to the scientific meeting only, not delegates, not social programme, and not family members.
  • The Panel noted differences between the programme provided by Wyeth and that provided by the complainant; Wyeth’s programme did not state which companies were providing educational grants.
  • The programme referenced ‘Dinner’ each evening; the alleged cultural musical event was not mentioned on the programme.
⚖️

Outcome

  • No breach of the Code.
  • The Panel ruled that because Wyeth had not agreed to sponsor the 2007 meeting, there could be no breach of Clauses 2, 9.1 and 19.1.
  • The Panel commented that if entertainment (eg a musical/cultural event) were part of the meeting, it would be inappropriate for a pharmaceutical company to sponsor it.
